Osama is dead, blog isn't.

However, this is a criminally short post made for the sole purpose of whoring out my t-shirt designs.

More coming later.

HP + Daft Punk Interface

These are just way too cool for me to pass up. James White just posted these test images he made a while back. To quote the man himself on the project,
"Here are some test images I did for a job a while back. The mighty Psyop hired me to create some interface mock-ups for the new (at the time) HP touch computer for use in a television ad featuring Daft Punk onstage. The idea was to create some abstract shapes and color which would be put to motion as Daft Punk manipulated the shapes to trigger music during a performance.
Even though the idea was super cool, it was unfortunately one of those projects that didn’t see the light of day. I was involved early in the pitch stage and the project was either abandoned, or a different concept was picked which is quite common in the turbulent land of advertising. Either way, it was fun to work on and I wanted to post these mock-ups to show the early stages of conceptual when dealing with a television ad."

It's a shame these never came to production, but that's the way of the design world.

Duoform

UK based designer Pete Harrison, also known as Aeiko, just released his new design blog, called Duoform. Go check it out, though there isn't a whole lot of content on it just yet.

Also, don't forget about his official website, where he has more of his work and some is available for purchase.

Hellboy Illustration Tutorial

Learn how to make the poster shown above (and a slightly different version) using only Adobe Illustrator! It's a fairly advanced tutorial, but they take you step-by-step on this one. If you have illustrator, give this one a shot, it teaches a lot of techniques you may not have known.

How to make a Daft Punk Helmet

Well, it's not so much of a tutorial, as it may seem, but it's a cool video nonetheless. Plus I gotta give a shout out to my man Volpin. I can't say we're best friends, but we're acquaintances. Either way, check it out. And you should see some of the other props that he does.

Here's a quick one.
Some great and unique drawings by HBT. They're a blast from the past if you were around in the 80's.

Not Dead and Valentines!

It's been a while since I updated, a lot of stuff was going on last week. I'd get more into detail, but that's not what this blog is about.

Here are some free Printable Valentines you can give to that special someone, or someone who can't take a hint. Courtesy of Woot.com
More of each set in the link.

Onward Until Infinity

This piece is an oldy but goody. It was the first thing I made in photoshop after graduating from high school and was by far the best thing that I had made at the time. It was made to motivate myself and to be positive and never stop reaching for my goals.

SAY WHAT AGAIN

I think it's about time that I posted another kinetic typography piece. Here's a classic one from one of the greatest scenes in cinema history. Enjoy.

Illustrations by Vinicius Menezes

Vinicius Menezes is a Brazilian illustrator from Brazil and loves to illustrate. His illustrations are very illustrative and Brazilian. Can you tell I don't know much about this guy? Either way, he's got some great stuff. Here's a few that I liked in particular, see the rest on his DeviantArt.

Shiny Asian

Here's a piece I made in my boredom at school a while back. I had some new techniques to test out and I had made anything in a while. It ended up looking really cool, in my opinion.

MAHVEL BAYBEE

If you're a fan of the Marvel vs Capcom series, and you haven't seen the following video, slap yourself. Then watch the video. The next one is a sequel. The next one is me barely able to contain my excitement for Marvel vs Capcom 3 coming out in less than two weeks.

Something a Little Different

I feel like I've been posting a lot of the same general stuff. You know, spacey and lighting and super cool and stuff. So here's a bit more of the typographic and the illustrative side. Let me know what you think!

Where to get Free Fonts

Having a large library of fonts is an absolute must as a graphic designer, though it's really handy for anyone.
So for the sake of being generous, here are all of the good free sites for getting fonts. Unfortunately, Abduzeedo has them on a week-by-week basis, so it's harder to browse; however, they also show the fonts in context of how they'd be used.
Enjoy!

Looks like I just broke 3 Digits for my loyal fans! Here's a little something I made in commemoration of this joyous event.

My Take on it.

I decided to take a crack at the last tutorial I posted. I usually don't do them, since they have nothing to teach me, except for that one specific technique. But in my boredom I figured I should belt this one out. Because I didn't have access to the same brushes and I didn't feel like doing some of the more monotonous steps, mine's pretty different, but I think it still looks cool.

Another Tutorial

Here's another relatively easy tutorial, this one yields some pretty cool effects.

BossLogic

I think it's about time that I imparted the works of another great designer. Today's is BossLogic, a young guy from Australia who loves video games and is damn good at what he does. He's another guy that you make have seen around if you visit sites like shoryuken.com

There are many more in the Street Fighter Tron series
Inspired by the Crysis suit
"Hyper-Real" Rose is also one of many
There are also many of the "Simplistic" series.

And this was a collab with another artist.

He does a lot of series, as you can probably tell. Go check out the rest of his works on his DeviantArt or on his official website.

A not-as-easy One.

Because the last tutorial I posted was super simple and can be done in less than five minutes, provided that you're comfortable with photoshop, I felt like I should post another one that's a bit more engaging for my more advanced followers. This one yields a cooler effect, but requires the use of some stock imagery.

Tuesday, January 25, 2011

Here's an easy one.

No, seriously, this one's super easy. And it can be done with almost any reasonably recent Photoshop version (CS and above, probably). Sure the effect isn't all that fantastic, but I'm sure it can be put to good use.

SignalNoise

I had completely forgotten to mention SignalNoise.com in my list of inspirational websites. Shame on me. So to make up for my lapse in memory, it's getting its own post.
SignalNoise is the website for Canadian designer James White. He's a fantastic artist and you make recognize some of his work.
Go check out his website, maybe buy a poster or shirt or something.

Black Swan Review

I saw the movie Black Swan at around midnight last night. And right before I saw it, I watched the following video, which completely changed my perspective on everything that happened; not necessarily for better or worse, but different. If you're thinking about seeing Black Swan, watch this review first.

As for my own input on the movie, it was interesting, that's for sure. It makes little sense for a while then you start to understand that everyone in this movie is insane. Okay, not everyone, just all of the female characters, which is everyone except the director.
If you like cerebral films that look deep into insanity, or if you have a thing for flat-chested women, go check it out. There's hot Mila on Natalie action.

DOT. DOT. DOT.

Here's another motion graphics piece, this one being kinetic typography. Also it's hilarious. Enjoy.

Future Rock Band

I haven't posted any sort of motion graphics on here yet. And as a lover of motion graphics, that simply cannot stay the same. Here's a little something by FreddieW, an amazing video editor. You should check out some of his other stuff as well.

Can't let this one go by.

Yeah, this game looks hilariously awesome. I don't care if it's not some visually stunning masterpiece with a compelling story, and neither does Duke.
Fuckin' deal with it.

Gap Logo

I was going to wait until tomorrow, or at least later tonight to make another post. But this is kind of ridiculous. For those who don't know, the clothing brand Gap tried to update their identity and got a new logo. It wasn't well-received to say the least. The new logo was such a failure that the company reverted to their original logo and pretended the whole thing never happened.
The logo we're used to

The new piece of hipster trash

I personally like the old one much better, and I never liked it that much to begin with. To make matters worse, a website hosted a redesign contest, showing how much better their logo could have been.

Check out the entries at http://blog.iso50.com/20224/gap-redesign-contest/ but be warned, there are a lot of them. Some of them are very good, I like 51 and 55, others are complete ass, see 75.

SpaceDan

So here's the base image I used for my last post. It was something I did last year for a friend's birthday, since I'm so damn poor and I can't get him anything. But then, in a way, it's also more special that way, since no one else would ever be able to find this. Let me know your thoughts on the matter.
Also, the image was taken from his Facebook because he couldn't get me any high-res images in time to do this. So, yeah, shitty quality image on a big ass background.

I'm just gonna leave this here.

If you've played Melty Blood: Actress Again, this should be very familiar. If not, it makes the game look really bad. Either way, enjoy.

Real post coming soon.

Flat 3-D Style in Photoshop

Here's another tutorial today. This one comes via MediaMilitia.com.
Because the last tutorial I posted was a bit advanced, I'm posting one that's much simpler to jump into if you're not very familiar with photoshop. Unfortunately, this may be something that a lot of you already know. But even so, you might learn a thing or two.

Lupe

While I did post something based off of a Kanye West song earlier, I am much more fond of Lupe Fiasco. So I have to give homage to my main man and so I made this one. Let me know what you think!

TRON: Legacy tutorial

http://abduzeedo.com/tron-legacy-tutorial

I'll be heading up to Los Angeles tomorrow, to commemorate the closing not closing of Arcade Infinity. So I'm posting this tonight, so I don't have to get up any earlier than I need to.
Some of you requested that I post a tutorial up here, so here's the first one, by way of Abduzeedo.com. This one might be a bit complicated for beginners to photoshop, so the next one will be toned down a bit. All of the files used are available at the end of the page, so you don't need Cinema4D in order to complete this tutorial.

Let me know what you think!

Best Sites For Inspiration (in my opinion)

As a designer, I often find myself with no passion to make something, so when that happens, I'll check out one of these badboys and get my juices flowing.

Thursdays

Sorry about not updating today/yesterday/thursday. My class schedule is pretty light through the week then Thursday comes and I have a 14-hour day, not including the commute. So Thursdays pretty much will never have a new post from me. Sorry if this ruins anyone's day. But really, this blog isn't that fantastic anyway :D

Paint Your Own Future

Last thing I made in 2010
So guys, here's another one I made recently. December 31st to be exact.
So what do you think, should I post some more work for now or do you want more videos, some inspirational stuff by other people, or some tips on using photoshop?
Let me know in the comments section, and don't forget to follow!
